How does it work?
Every year, under the leadership of dedicated volunteer Kris Segelstrom, and a corps of volunteers, dozens of area children with special needs get to go shopping before school begins.
Kohl’s and Summer Santa hosts the children and their volunteer chaperones for a 2-hour shopping spree to find the right outfits to start the new school year. Kohl’s, in a gesture of grand generosity, gives Summer Santa a special price break. The rest of the money is funded by Summer Santa donors.
After all the shopping is done, the Summer Santa kids receive backpacks and other gifts.
For the kids, it’s a wonderful experience. For many, it’s the first time they get new clothes before school; many usually only receive hand-me-downs.
For the adults and teenagers who help chaperone, it’s a touching reminder that youngsters need help with the most basics of life.
How you can help
This program brings out the best in Summer Santa. Most of our work is done anonymously, in the Santa tradition. But the July and August shopping sprees bring tears because the moments in the stores are so memorable and touching.
If you would like to help this program, please consider making a donation to Summer Santa.
The more money we raise, the more children we can take shopping.
